THE ISLAND OF AVOCADOS

It is estimated that today about 90% of the avocados produced in Greece are grown in Western Crete. The main reason for this is the combination of the climatic and soil conditions of the area, which is ideal for avocado cultivation.

The Citrus and Avocado Producers Association of the Agricultural Cooperative of Chania is responsible for producing the superb avocados of the cooperative. Their exceptional flavor and rich nutrients have established the avocados of Chania among the most known in Europe. As a matter of fact, a large proportion of the locally produced avocados is exported to the markets of central and northern Europe.

Avocado, as a subtropical plant, is ideally suited to the climate of the fertile area of Chania. The first avocado crops in the region were established as early as the 1960s.

A FRUIT WITH UNIQUE PROPERTIES

Avocado, although it is considered a fruit rather than vegetable, may very well fit in our salad. It is a fruit that originates from Central America and has exceptional health promoting properties, while also having excellent nutritional value.

Avocado, like olive oil, is rich in monounsaturated fat, which is the so-called “good” fat, and lowers cholesterol. Also, avocados contain substances that help protection against prostate cancer and breast cancer. They also contain significant amounts of potassium and folic acid, which contribute to better heart health and lower blood pressure.

A special property of the avocado is that it contains all the relevant amino acids needed to create a complete protein. Specifically, the plant protein of avocados is easily absorbed by the body, as the fruit also contains a large number of fibers. For these reasons, avocados are an important source of protein for many vegetarians.

The combination of vitamins C and E and omega-3 fatty acids found in avocados, has strong anti-inflammatory properties. These properties are the main reason why avocados help both in preventing and treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The abundant properties of the avocado that strengthen our immune system and assist in the treatment of many diseases, make this unique fruit a real superfood that should firmly be part of our diet.
